South graduate and former Roar editor-in-chief Tom Haskin won first place Saturday in the Sports Story of the Year contest at the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Washington, DC. Haskin’s Story, “Homophobia holds on in athletics," one of the six finalists, discusses the lack of homosexual acceptance in South athletics. The convention took place from Nov. 12-15, 2009 and was attended by more than 6,300 student journalists from 50 different states and beyond, including student journalists from South Korea, London and Germany.
